Update: 4/8/18 - Happy Spring, I'm in the mood for l-o-ve!

Springtime makes me think of the power of the heart and renewal. I also feel a little homesick for Scotland and Spain since this time of year is so beautiful there. This very moment finds me consumed with London Book Fair, and looking forward to Romantic Times Booklovers Convention in May, so what do I want to see?

  • Bring on stories set "out West" - in the USA (especially Colorado and Nebraska). I'd also like to see those set in the UK (East Anglia and Cambridgeshire, and Scotland), and the Mediterranean. Give me Spain (Costa del Sol), and Mallorca any day of the week. Just remember, these are the places I lived the longest, They are the places I call home, the places I yearn for, and the places I want to share with readers. So, I'll be a tough critic. Thrill me!

Suspense, Thriller, and Mystery

  • Supernatural mystery. Enough said.
  • More procedurals
  • Mean girls who think they're right. I want that story in so many forms!
  • More "how did they get into that mess and back out of it" stories
  • Did you say you had a dog mystery? Bring it! ("Dog" is an inclusive word. Cats, parrots, etc. will all be given equal consideration.)
  • Have you read the newest by our Margaret Mizushima or by Louise Penny, Rachel Sargeant, Gregg Olson, Preston & Child, or the latest by our Jeff Nesbit? 2 Die 4 - Got one? Send it! I'm also awaiting the newest by Christopher Rice and I adored this thriller by Bonnie Hearn Hill.
  • I recently sold rights to Cate Holahan's THE WIDOWER'S WIFE (Crooked Lane Books, 2016). Such a witty tale. Please send me books that keep me guessing the way this one did! (See more in Foreign Rights)
  • On the mystery side, so much of what you send me is good. Keep it coming!
  • Particular subjects and settings I've been pining for include
    • Triple Crown
    • Rumrunners - current day
    • Naughty royalty which might fall into the "how did they get into that mess" category
    • Faroe Islands
    • Malfa, Italy
    • Vancouver

Romance, Inspirational, and Women's Fiction

  • I'm still in search of this story that I told you about back in February! I recently read about a veteran-owned adventure business that featured extreme sports, extreme excursion, extreme activities, and extreme experience for PTSD overcomers and their families. I'd love to see such a place and/or characterization wound into a really lovely Romance, RomCom, or Women's Fiction. Maybe it could even be included in Mystery.
  • With the royal wedding quickly approaching, I'd like to see (mostly contemporary royalty romance. We don't require a curtsy, just a wonderful storyline, and HEA.
  • Here's a long-shot - Triple Crown, anyone?
  • I always want to see strong protags whose animals (dogs, horses, etc.) are an integral part of their lives. Does that include therapy animals? You bet!

Further, I'd like to see

  • the Happily Ever After which involves issues of a more mature nature like adults raising their grandchildren or facing later in life pregnancy (Ooh, that's a great storyline right there!)
  • senior animals in those stories, i.e.; rescue dogs and cats over puppies and kittens, senior horses, and such
  • enduring love, or stories about characters who are old enough to know better (which could be 18 or 81) but who remain quietly thrilled by the belief that real love is available for them
  • a character who is well aware of his or her ability to love and be loved. Everyone deserves to be loved, after all, and it's okay to know it.
  •  a "this isn't my first rodeo" sort of character, who's been close, but never really fallen in love. Maybe it's the "late bloomer" whose never allowed herself to fall for that perfect someone, or maybe it's the character who's been too available with too many someones to fall for the person of his dreams.
  • the stories we love to watch on Hallmark, AND everything produced by the Shonda Rhimes like How To Get Away With Murder etc.

 Children's

I'm taking v-e-r-y little in the way of children's these days because editors are simply so busy. But, here's what I want to see, just in case.

  • Funny
  • Funny
  • Funny
  • As an editor recently told me, "Make me snort my almond milk out of my nose as I read it." THAT'S how funny I want children's material to be. Issues I'm seeing:
    • language that doesn't ring true. Remember your audience
    • obnoxious is not the same as funny

Nonfiction

  • Real health, real empowerment
  • Prescriptive that shows readers how to live their best lives, rather than stories about how the author "survived" since readers wonder about the "what's in it for me" - provide it so I can publish it!
  • A memoir from well-platformed musicians, actors, and others in the entertainment industry
  • Real faith
  • Still in search of authentic lifestyles, the unique take on homesteading, gardening, living off the land, etc.
  • ...dogs! I'll reiterate that Meatball, our Director of Special Ops, who just so happens to be, ahem, a cat, uses the term "dog" generically. Great accounts about exceptional animals.
  • My forever weakness: anything to do with Colorado and the wide-open West.

Happy writing!
